How does Spray Dryer Work?

Spray drying method employs a single process to convert a liquid solution/slurry into a powder.The liquid/slurry is atomized at high velocity, in a specially designed Drying Chamber, into a stream of hot air to evaporate the solvent. The dry powder is then separated from the air stream. We custom design Spray Dryers to suit the product quality, feed conditions, heating source available and the local environment norms.

Spray drying is a process of dehydrating fluids, solutions and thin slurries, into powder form. Liquid or slurry material to be dehydrated is sprayed in the form of a fine droplet dispersion into hot air stream. Both air and material either travel in parallel or counter flow. Drying in spray dryer occurs at very fast rate so that the contact of material to heat is not for longer time hence its does not damage the heat selectivity materials and becomes ideal for drying such materials.

Working Principle of a Spray Dryer

  • Material to be dried is sprayed / atomized in to the stream of drying medium (air).
  • The water / solvent is evaporated and gets conveyed out by drying medium.
  • The dried material is discharged out of spray dryer chamber in form of powder or granules.
  • The drying medium is passed through a particulate separation equipment for fine particle separation.

Hot air inside the Spray Dryer chamber can be achieved by the means of direct firing of gas or by the means of fuels or uses of heat exchangers. Pressure spray heads, nozzles, and centrifugal atomizers are applied for distribution of the fluid elements. Processed product is separated by using cyclone separators in which the air is applied laterally at the top or settling chamber in which the direction of airflow is reversed to achieve separation of dried products by means of gravity.
